During one of my browsing sessions I came across a blog post on ConceptArt that promoted Marko Djurdjevic’s new artbook. The art Marko shared in that post shattered my unprepared mind.
Artbooks come and go and I must admit, rarely do I find one interesting enough to actually make the purchase. Marko Djurdjevic’s first artbook, filled to the brim with coverwork for Marvel, has seriously infected me with a bad case of “want it now”. I grew up on characters like Spiderman, Captain America and the X-Men and to see my childhood heroes brought to life with such amazing skill is just mindblowing. Below are over 40 pieces from Marko’s book “The Marvel art of Marco Djurdjevic”, enjoy and be amazed.
If you want to check Marko’s 240 page artbook out have a look here at Amazon (not an affilaite link mind you). If you want to know more about Marko Djurdjevic have a look at his Wikipedia biography which features a bunch of links to more of his work.

Awesome stuff – reminds me a bit of Alex Ross…

It is a little like Alex Ross. Though I think this guys is WAY better. Alex Ross crosses the line for me to being too realistic. Ross’ art is almost creepy.

These are some wonderful renditions of Marvel Characters. I love the reality he brings to the characters, and would have to agree that the work is reminiscent of Alex Ross.
September 23rd '09Aurora Says:
I agree that he has that painterly style that Ales Ross has but I think Marko’s work is more vivid and also a bit more stylized.

Excellent work, great inspiration.

There’s a lot going for the first Illustration… but then again, I’m a fan of the black and red combination!
Diverse range. Inspiring!
September 25th '09bronson Says:
The illustrations are sublime, but my favs are the black and red ones too, for me they’re a cut above the others.

The only one that I thought was reminiscent of Alex Ross’ work was the Human Torch which I’m almost certain he referenced heavily. Great artist, though. Very inspirational and definitely one of my all time favorites.
September 25th '09Adamn Says:
Yeah, he’s like Alex Ross–if Alex Ross learned what composition meant. Ross’s paintings are amazingly good, and completely boring to look at. Djurdjevic is making works that are interesting and evince reaction, and are also the equal of Ross in skill. Crown this new king.

Cool for Marvel stuff.
September 25th '09Zack Says:
Hey I own one of those comics! The one of the Hood standing on the building in the snow.
September 25th '09Clayton Says:
Captain looks way better in blue. The graphics are great. I’m sorry, but is bell bottom pants a necessary addition to the suit?
September 26th '09Ally Says:
Hey, those aren’t bell bottom pants, the Captain’s original uniform had weird boots. Look him up on Wikipedia, honest!
September 26th '09Aurora Says:
Ally’s right, even though I can understand where the confusion comes from, the Captain’s pants look awfully retro in that piece.
September 29th '09Kialaya Says:
Beautiful, the pictures have such strength. And the use of red-black-white in the first ones is really astonishing. Thanks for showing us. Makes you wonder what other incredible work is in the book.
September 26th '09Ally Says:
Amazing stuff, just WOW.
September 26th '09Chris Ronk Says:
The best collection of super hero art I’ve seen on the internet. Great stuff.
September 27th '09AitorSpain Says:
AWESOME !!
September 27th '09Liz Says:
Meh, he’s good, but nothing here makes me go “wow, that’s extra special” – no mind blowers, in fact, content wise their fairly boring and straight forward. Not even that pretty, just well done.
(BTW, I am an artist of similar genre)
September 28th '09Aurora Says:
No mind blowers? I find that hard to swallow Liz, Marko brings the Marvel characters to life like nobody I’ve seen does. But hey, in the end art is subject to taste before anything else.
September 29th '09The Marcus Says:
Very Nice. I’m not too much into comics but these are excellent.

Comparing Djurdjevic to Ross is like comparing Picasso to Schultz!
September 29th '09Dave Says:
Very impressive. My one complaint is the arrow in the 10th-to-last image. What does he suppose is going to happen when he tries to draw that bow more than about 8 inches?

Fantastic creations.
October 23rd '09Wynn Says:
Wow. This is the guy who should draw every Marvel handbook entry illustration.
October 25th '09Micheal Clinton Says:
The one thing I hate about art is having your work compared to another artist. Your work is your own and whoever you might have or might not have referenced it is still yours no matter what. You have an amazing talent and I hope it takes you far. Great Job!
October 28th '09Hemant Kumar Says:
People who are comparing Marko to Alex Ross have no idea of who Marko is? He is a self taught artist from Germany, who in early years of this decade took gaming industry by storm working with Massive Black Inc. in SF. He has been there done it all and now he does these covers after returning to his home town back in Germany. He is a legendary concept artist who is a lot different from Alex Ross. The common link between the two can be, that he too shuns the overgrown anatomical approach towards character design associated with comic book illustrations. The sheer attention to detail and beautiful compositions say it all. I’ve been following his work for years now… and Alex Ross’s for even more… and this is the first time I have heard a comparison between the two.
October 30th '09Thor Says:
That was a great collection of art. Only thing is, I wish there were titles, or at least a list of the characters in each picture, or what comic book title it is from. Maybe some one knows who the guy with the two 9mm’s and a red cape is, or the shaman looking guy?
One thing I can’t figure out is, who was that guy with the hammer? ;)
November 1st '09Legal News Says:
Haha. Interesting set of comments here. I truly think this guy’s work is magical. Agree with Thor — I’d like to see a list of characters.
All of the colors work well together, making each photo more intense. It’s brilliant.
Thanks for posting.
November 18th '09Sanjian Says:
Marko’s stuff kicks ass. I started to read Thor comics mostly for an eyeful of his work. The shot of Thor walking away from the floating Asgard is one of the best comic covers I have seen.
December 7th '09P.S. Alex Ross is a hack. This guy is a genius.
