While most hyped up blockbuster movies disappoint upon release the poster designs are often straight up gorgeous. Don’t just take my word for it, I have the showcase to prove it!
The film industry is a hard place to stand out in, a decent movie requires a huge budget, tons of skill and a talented cast. While that might be a tough reality for movie makers it’s actually good news for us, it means their creatives will have to double their efforts when it comes to movie poster design.
I’d love to hear what your favorites are, I have to confess the GI Joe Ninjas are pretty damn cool from a nerdy perspective while the Japanese Flash Gordon poster is in one word epic.

Note: A lot of these come from Internet movie poster awards – if you like stuff like this be sure to check them out.

Am I crazy, or are most of these merely horrible PS abortions? I mean, c’mon, where’s the art here (with exception of the fantastic Flash Gordon poster)? I think people forget how amazing posters USED to be (pre-PS). Where people actually created art rather than composited photos provided by the studios. Drew Struzan anyone?

Yes, most of these are hardcore photo-manipulations with some typography thrown into the mix. If you like meaningful, art inspired posters than the average movie poster release will not excite you. In the end I think it’s all tied to the target audience the movie industry is trying to reach, an audience that most of time, isn’t very concerned with art.

I agree. I think a lot of these are “let’s take an image from the movie and slap some typography on it.” I think my favorite one of this bunch is the Inglorious Bastards one. It actually looks like it has some creativity (though not as much as some) and reminds me of the posters from the 70’s and 80’s.

How about the movie poster for the film Hard Candy? It beautifully summarizes the movie in one crisp image. I really like the poster for Thirst that you have on your list. Just incredible!
